Fountain Pen Show Season Is Nearly Upon Us
There are many pen shows all over the country, but my favorite will probably always be the Chicago Pen Show. It is, after all, my first pen show experience. And if you have never been, let me give you some handy tips.
Timing. Pen shows will ebb and flow in volume of people. Saturday is generally a rush, so be sure to allow plenty of time to work your way through the room and the crowds. If you want to have a little more space, try Friday or Sunday. But buyer beware, one-of-a-kind or limited items may go quickly so factor that into your decision on when to arrive. For me personally, I like to give it the whole weekend experience. A semi-staycation effect.
Budget. I know! I’m still trying to win the lotto, but come prepared to spend within your limits. Bring cash. You can get some good deals with cash. I recommend bringing the amount of cash you are willing to spend and then having a backup credit card for the one item that might require you to exceed that budget. You know what I’m talking about. Something you’ve long looked for and might happen across at one of the vendor’s tables. Be prepared to find your diamond in the rough and work that possibility into your budgeting. Or, follow my life coach and just bring your mortgage or rent payment for the month to spend on pens.
People. Give your plans a little bit of wiggle room. I’ve had outstanding, unplanned conversations with people I’ve never met or only talked to online at shows. Connection is something that this community offers freely and without hesitation. People are excited to teach you, show you, and let you try things. If it is your first show, say so. The response will be an excited run down of things you should do, see, or try. And if you can, spend some time after the show talking with new or old friends. It’s like a reunion and it will fill your soul with something positive. We can all use a little more of that.
